Royals come from behind to beat Indians

The Kansas City Royals (21-27) come from behind to beat the Cleveland Indians (24-23) 5-2 in game two of their three-game series at Progressive Field. The Indians have now lost four of their last five games.

SS Alcides Escobar reached on a fielding error by 2B Jason Kipnis to lead off the game. 3B Mike Moustakas went on to single and CF Lorenzo Cain walked to load the bases for the Kansas City Royals.

1B Eric Hosmer struck out next on a check swing but did not like the call at all. Home plate umpire Bill Welke ejected him for arguing and manager Ned Yost, who came to Hosmer’s defense, was tossed as well.

Once the tempers cooled, C Salvador Perez continued with a sacrifice flyball and drove in Alcides Escobar for the first run of the game.

SS Francisco Lindor tied the game in the bottom of the inning with his 11th home run of the season.

The Indians took the lead in the third. RF Daniel Robertson hit an infield single to lead off the the inning and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Jason Kipnis followed with a single and drove Daniel Robertson home for a 2-1 score.

Cleveland’s SP Danny Salazar, who settled down nicely after a shaky first inning, pitched himself into trouble again in the sixth. He loaded the bases with a one-out double to RF Jorge Bonifacio and back-to-back walks to DH Brandon Moss and 2B Whit Merrifield.

Skipper Terry Francona decided to replace Danny Salazar with RP Boone Logan after 5.1 innings. The reliever gave up a single to LF Alex Gordon and the game was tied at two runs apiece.

Terry Francona made another pitching change but Kansas City scored another two runs when Alcides Escobar hit a double off RP Nick Goody.

Danny Salazar (3-5) wound up surrendering 6 hits, 5 walks and 3 earned runs while fanning 4. He now has a 5.50 ERA with a 1.59 WHIP on the year.

Kansas City’s SP Jason Vargas (6-3) went 5.2 innings, allowing 9 hits, 2 walks and 2 earned runs while striking out 2. His ERA and WHIP rose to 2.39 and 1.13, respectively.

Mike Moustakas gave the Royals an insurance run in the ninth inning with his 13th homer of the season.

CL Kelvin Herrera pitched a one-hit ninth to earn his 11th save of the year. He posts a 3.86 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP this year.

Mike Moustakas went 3-for-4 with a homer. He is batting .260 and has 23 runs, 13 HR and 26 RBI in 2017.
