Rockies win Series against Cardinals

The Colorado Rockies (33-19) beat the St. Louis Cardinals (24-23) 8-4 in the rubber game.

The Rockies were the first to score. With one out in the second inning, RF Gerardo Parra and LF Ian Desmond hit back-to-back singles, moving Parra to third base. SS Alexi Amarista followed with a groundout but drove in Gerardo Parra for a 1-0 lead.

Colorado extended their lead in the fourth. 3B Nolan Arenado drew a leadoff walk and 1B Mark Reynolds hit a single. Gerardo Parra homered next and put the Rockies up 4-0. It was his sixth long ball of the season.

St. Louis got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when 3B Jedd Gyorko hit a leadoff home run. It was his eighth homer of the year. With one out 2B Greg Garcia recorded his first long ball of the season to cut the deficit to two runs.

Colorado’s SP German Marquez (4-2) recorded one more out before he was relieved. He went 5.2 innings, allowing 8 hits, 1 walk and 2 earned runs while fanning 5. He now has a 3.76 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP on the year.

St. Louis’ SP Lance Lynn (4-3) pitched 5 innings, giving up 6 hits, 1 walk and 4 earned runs while striking out 3. His ERA and WHIP increased to 2.93 and 1.06, respectively.

The Cardinals halved the lead again in the seventh with a one-out home run from LF Tommy Pham. It was his fifth homer of the season.

The Rockies put the game out of reach in the eighth inning. 2B DJ LeMahieu hit a leadoff single, advanced to second base on a wild pitch and moved to third base when Nolan Arenado reached on a fielder’s choice. Mark Reynolds then hit an RBI-single with Nolan Arenado running to third base.

RF Gerardo Parra, too reached on a fielder’s choice and loaded the bases for the Rockies. Ian Desmond followed with a hit into fielder’s choice (Nolan Arenado out) but left the bases loaded. PH Carlos Gonzalez then hit a sacrifice flyball to drive Mark Reynolds in and Gerardo Parra as well as Ian Desmond moved up one base each.

C Tony Wolters singled next and drove in two more runs to put the Rockies up 8-3.

The Cardinals, however, scored the final run of the game in the ninth. PH Paul DeJong hit a home run in his first at-bat in the majors for a final score of 8-4.

Gerardo Parra went 3-for-4 with 3 runs, 1 HR and 3 RBI. He is batting .279 and has 20 runs, 6 HR and 23 RBI on the year.

The St. Louis Cardinals return home to host a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers (30-20) from Monday to Thursday.

The Colorado Rockies continue their homestand with a two-game series against the Seattle Mariners (22-29) on Monday and Tuesday before heading to Seattle for another two games against the same opponent on Wednesday and Thursday.
