Wil Myers homers Padres past Giants in Extra Innings

1B Wil Myers homers the San Diego Padres (11-16) past the San Francisco Giants (9-17) in extra innings to decide the three-game series in their favor.

The San Francisco Giants, however, scored the first two runs and looked like the potential winner of this matchup.

2B Joe Panik was hit by a pitch to open the fifth inning and advanced to third base on a double from CF Gorkys Hernández. SP Ty Blach followed with a sacrifice fly ball and drove in Joe Panik to put the Giants up 1-0.

San Francisco doubled the lead one inning later. RF Hunter Pence drew a leadoff walk and moved to second base on a groundout by C Buster Posey. 1B Michael Morse hit a double next and Hunter Pence came home for the 2-0 lead.

San Diego tied the game in the ninth. 2B Luis Sardiñas led the inning off and reached first base on a throwing error by SS Eduardo Núñez. With one out, PH Héctor Sánchez hit his first home run of the season. CL Mark Melancon blew his second save of the year in the process.

The Padres completed their comeback win in the 12th inning. 3B Cory Spangenberg hit a leadoff single and advanced to second base on a one-out single from SS Erick Aybar. Wil Myers followed and cleared the bases with his seventh home run of the season.

RP José M. Torres pitched a perfect inning to earn his first save of the year.

San Diego’s SP Clayton Richard worked 5.1 innings, giving up 6 hits, 1 walk and 2 earned runs while fanning 3. He now has a 4.29 ERA with a 1.49 WHIP on the season.

Ty Blach pitched 7 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 1. His ERA and WHIP improved to 2.55 and 0.91, respectively.

Wil Myers went 1-for-6 with a three-run homer. He is batting .310 and has 18 runs 7 HR and 20 RBI this year.

The San Diego Padres return home to host the Colorado Rockies (16-9) for a three-game series from Tuesday to Thursday.

The San Francisco Giants go on the road to face the Los Angeles Dodgers (14-12) for a three-game series from Monday through Wednesday.
