The Toronto Blue Jays (79-64) outmuscle the Tampa Bay Rays (60-83) as they win 3-2 in the opener of their three-game series.
It took the Blue Jays six innings to break the deadlock. 2B Devon Travis hit a leadoff double and DH Jose Bautista homered with two outs to give Toronto a 2-0 lead.
The Rays responded with back-to-back home runs from 3B Evan Longoria and 1B Brad Miller to tie the game in the seventh.
PH Ezequiel Carrera scored the game-winning run with a leadoff homer in the eighth inning. It was his fifth long ball of the season.
CL Roberto Osuna pitched a one-hitter in the ninth to earn his 32nd save of the year. He now posts a 2.32 ERA with a 0.89 WHIP.
Tampa Bay’s SP Jake Odorizzi worked 7 innings, allowing 4 hits, 1 walk and 2 earned runs while striking out 4. He has a 3.81 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP to show for this season.
Toronto’s SP Francisco Liriano pitched 6.1 innings, giving up 3 hits, 1 walk and 2 earned runs while fanning 6. He has a 4.06 ERA with a 1.23 WHIP on the year.
Jose Bautista went 1-for-4 with 1 run, 1 HR and 2 RBI. He is batting .228 and has 57 runs, 18 HR and 58 RBI in 97 games this season.
