Royals win Series at Marlins

The Kansas City Royals win the series against the Miami Marlins as they beat them 5-2 in the rubber game at Marlins Park.

Kansas City took the lead in the third inning. 3B Cheslor Cuthbert doubled with one out and came home on a two-out double from C Salvador Perez.

In the top of the fourth, SS Alcides Escobar hit a leadoff home run to double the lead but Miami tied the game in the bottom of the frame.

CF Marcell Ozuna singled with one out and C J.T. Realmuto was hit by a pitch next. 1B Xavier Scruggs followed with an infield single and drove in Marcell Ozuna and J.T. Realmuto.

Cheslor Cuthbert was charged with a throwing error on the play when in fact he fielded a difficult ground ball perfectly and made a spectacular throw to 1B Eric Hosmer, who had to take his foot slightly off the bag to keep the ball in play.

The Royals broke the tie in the sixth inning. LF Alex Gordon reached on an infield single and advanced to second base on 2B Dee Gordon’s throwing error. Alcides Escobar followed with a double and drove in Alex Gordon for a 3-2 lead.

Alcides Escobar went on to move to third base on a passed ball and came home on a one-out sacrifice flyball from PH Kendry Morales.

Kansas City added one last run in the ninth. 2B Raul Mondesi drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. With one out he managed to steal third base as well and came home on J.T. Realmuto’s throwing error.

CL Kelvin Herrera pitched a perfect inning to earn his ninth save of the year. He now posts a 1.87 ERA with a 0.83 WHIP.

Kansas City’s SP Edinson Volquez (10-10) went 5 innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 2. His ERA and WHIP improved to 4.88 and 1.44, respectively.

Miami’s SP Tom Koehler (9-9) pitched 6 innings, giving up 7 hits, 2 walks and 3 earned runs while fanning 6. He has a 3.85 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP this season.

Alcides Escobar went 2-for-4 with 2 runs, 1 HR and 2 RBI. He is batting .263 and now has 46 runs, 3 HR and 37 RBI on the year.

The Kansas City Royals (66-61) continue their road trip with a three-game series at the Boston Red Sox (71-56) from Friday to Sunday.

The Miami Marlins (66-61) host a three-game series against the San Diego Padres (53-74) from Friday through Sunday.
