Orioles come back to beat Nationals

The Baltimore Orioles (68-56) come from behind to beat the Washington Nationals (73-51) 4-3 in the opener of a two-game series at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Washington opened the score in the first inning. CF Trea Turner drew a leadoff walk and went on to steal second base. 2B Daniel Murphy singled with one out and drove Trea Turner home for the first run of the game.

Baltimore tied the game in the third with a leadoff home run by 2B Jonathan Schoop. It was his 20th long ball of the year.

3B Anthony Rendon restored the one-run lead with a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth inning but the Orioles had the right answer in the bottom of the frame.

3B Manny Machado hit a leadoff double and came home on another double from 1B Chris Davis, while RF Bryce Harper had difficulties controlling the ball. RF Mark Trumbo followed with his MLB-leading 38th home run of the season to give Baltimore a 4-2 lead.

In the seventh inning, the Nationals cut the deficit to one with a leadoff home run from SS Danny Espinosa but CL Zach Britton secured the win for the Orioles with a perfect ninth to earn his 38th save of the year.

Washington’s SP A.J. Cole (0-1) was called up from Triple-A Syracuse to make a spot start in place of the injured Stephen Strasburg. Cole went 7 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 walks and 4 earned runs while fanning 8.

Baltimore’s Dylan Bundy (7-4) pitched 6 innings, giving up 3 hits, 4 walks and 2 earned runs while striking out 4. He now has a 3.33 ERA with a 1.28 WHIP on the season.

Mark Trumbo went 1-for-2 with 1 run, 1 HR and 2 RBI. He is batting .256 and has 71 runs, 38 HR and 92 RBI this year.
