Phillies come from behind to beat Giants in Extra Innings

The Philadelphia Phillies (50-59) come from four runs down to beat the San Francisco Giants (61-46) 5-4 in extra innings.

San Francisco got off to a blistering start. CF Denard Span doubled to lead off the game and advanced to third base on a single by LF Angel Pagan. With one out, Angel Pagan went on to steal second base. C Buster Posey hit a two-RBI single next to give the Giants an early 2-0 lead.

RF Hunter Pence led off the third inning with a single and Buster Posey doubled to drive him in. With one out, 1B Brandon Belt hit a sacrifice flyball and Buster Posey came home to put the Giants up 4-0.

Philadelphia’s 1B Ryan Howard and C Cameron Rupp hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to two runs.

The Phillies tied the game one inning later. PH Jimmy Paredes drew a walk with one out and 2B Cesar Hernandez hit a single. Both runners advanced one base each on a groundout by RF Aaron Altherr. 3B Maikel Franco followed with a single, driving in Jimmy Paredes and Cesar Hernandez.

1B Tommy Joseph was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the 12th inning and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by RP Luis Garcia. Cesar Hernandez followed with a walk and Aaron Altherr reached on Eduardo Nunez’ fielding error to load the bases. Maikel Franco singled next and drove in the game-winning run for the Phillies.

San Francisco’s SP Johnny Cueto worked 7.2 innings, allowing 7 hits, 1 walk and 4 earned runs while fanning 10. He now has a 2.73 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP on the season.

Philadelphia’s SP Phil Klein was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to make a spot start in place of the injured Aaron Nola. He pitched 5 innings, giving up 8 hits, 1 walk and 4 earned runs while striking out 3. Phil Klein was sent back down to Lehigh Valley after the game.
