Astros need Extra Innings against Blue Jays

The Houston Astros (56-49) need 14 innings to beat the Toronto Blue Jays (59-47) 2-1 in the opener of their four-game series.

Houston scored the first run of the game in the sixth inning with a two-out homer from 2B Jose Altuve. It was his 19th long ball of the year.

Toronto tied the game in the ninth with a leadoff homer by C Russell Martin. CL Will Harris blew his third save of the season and his second straight in the process.

Jose Altuve led off the bottom of the 14th inning with a single. SS Carlos Correa followed with a double to drive in the game-winning run for Houston.

Toronto’s SP Marcus Stroman worked 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 walk and 1 earned run while fanning 13. He now has a 4.74 ERA with a 1.29 WHIP on the season.

Houston’s SP Doug Fister pitched 6 innings, giving up 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8. His ERA and WHIP improved to 3.56 and 1.26, respectively.

Jose Altuve went 2-for-6 with 2 runs, 1 HR and 1 RBI. He is batting an impressive .356 and has 79 runs, 19 HR and 63 RBI this year.
