New York Mets shut out Miami Marlins

The New York Mets shut out the Miami Marlins as they win 3-0 in the rubber game at Marlins Park.

New York took the lead in the third inning. CF Michael Conforto led off with a single and moved to second and third base on back-to-back groundouts by C Rene Rivera and SP Steven Matz. 3B Jose Reyes followed with a triple and drove in Michael Conforto for the first run of the game.

It took the Mets until the eighth inning to extend their lead. PH Alejandro De Aza struck out to open the inning but reached first base on a wild pitch. With one out, RF Curtis Granderson drew a walk and LF Yoenis Cespedes followed with a single, driving in De Aza for the 2-0 lead. Curtis Granderson advanced to third base on the play.

1B James Loney hit another single and drove in Curtis Granderson for New York’s third run. The Mets went on to load the bases twice in this inning but did not manage to score again.

CL Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 35th save of the year. He now posts a 2.53 ERA with a 1.23 WHIP.

Steven Matz (8-6) worked 6 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 walks while fanning 6. His ERA and WHIP improved to 3.36 and 1.24, respectively.

Miami’s SP Jose Urena (1-2) pitched 6 innings, giving up 4 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 4. He now has a 5.34 ERA with a 1.41 WHIP on the season.

The New York Mets (52-45) return home to host a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals (52-45) from Monday to Wednesday.

The Miami Marlins (53-45) continue their homestand with a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies (45-55) from Monday through Wednesday.
