Yankees prevail over Giants

The New York Yankees (49-47) prevail over the San Francisco Giants (57-39) as they win 3-2 in the opener of their three-game series.

The Yankees were off to a good start. LF Brett Gardner singled to lead off the bottom of the first inning and 2B Starling Castro followed with a double to drive in Brett Gardner for the first run of the game.

New York went on to load the bases but could not capitalize on this opportunity.

The Yankees doubled the lead in the second inning. With one out, SS Ronald Torreyes singled and one out later Starling Castro and RF Carlos Beltran hit back-to-back singles, resulting in a run by Ronaldo Torreyes.

San Francisco loaded the bases in the fourth inning but could not get a run across home plate. They had more luck in the seventh inning.

DH Jarrett Parker drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third base on a two-out double by CF Denard Span. He eventually came home on a wild pitch from RP Dellin Betances.

The Giants tied the game in the top of the eighth inning. C Trevor Brown hit a one-out single and moved to third base on a two-out single by PH Grant Green. PH Mac Williamson followed with a double and drove in Trevor Brown for the tying run.

Starting catcher Buster Posey left the game in the fourth inning after fouling a ball off his leg. He suffered a foot contusion and is listed as day-to-day.

In the bottom of the eighth, New York scored the game-winning run. 3B Chase Headley led off with a single and 1B Mark Teixeira followed with a walk. C Austin Romine hit into fielder’s choice next but Chase Headley managed to come home on SS Brandon Crawford’s third error of the game.

CL Aroldis Chapman pitched a one-hitter in the ninth to earn his 20th save of the year. He now posts a 2.15 ERA with a 0.92 WHIP.

San Francisco’s SP Madison Bumgarner pitched 7 innings, allowing 7 hits, 3 walks and 2 earned runs while fanning 6. He now has a 2.14 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP on the season.

New York’s SP Masahiro Tanaka worked 6 scoreless innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4. He has a 3.00 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP to show for this year.
