Red Sox ride Homers to Victory over Yankees

The Boston Red Sox (50-38) hit three home runs as they win at the New York Yankees (44-45) 5-3 in game one of their three-game series.

C Ryan Hanigan homered with two outs to give Boston a 1-0 lead in the third inning. It was the first hit of the game and Ryan Hanigan’s first long ball of the season.

CF Jackie Bradley Jr. opened the fifth inning with a walk and 3B Travis Shaw homered him in to put the Red Sox up 3-0.

In the top of the sixth inning, Boston added another two runs. 2B Duston Pedroia hit a leadoff single and SS Xander Bogaerts drove him in with his 11th home run of the season.

New York’s SP Michael Pineda (3-9) was relieved after giving up his third home run of the game. He ended up allowing 5 hits, 1 walk and 5 earned runs while fanning 6. He now has a 5.56 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP on the season.

His replacement RP Chasen Shreve wound up loading the bases but the Red Sox were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

The Yankees worked the bases full in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff single from 2B Starling Castro, 3B Chase Headley was hit by a pitch and a one-out walk to CF Jacoby Ellsbury.

RF Carlos Beltran singled to drive in Starling Castro and Chase Headley for New York’s first two runs of the game. Jacoby Ellsbury advanced to third base on the play and came home after a single by C Brian McCann.

CL Koji Uehara pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the year. He posts a 4.67 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP this year.

Boston’s knuckleballer Steven Wright (11-5) worked 6 innings, giving up 3 hits, 1 walk and 3 earned runs while striking out 4. He has a 2.78 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP this season.

Travis Shaw went 1-for-3 with 1 run, 1 HR and 2 RBI. He is batting .269 this year and has 43 runs, 10 HR and 50 RBI.
