Giancarlo Stanton powers Marlins to Victory

RF Giancarlo Stanton homers twice as the Miami Marlins (44-40) win at the New York Mets (45-38) 5-2 in game two of their three-game series.

New York’s LF Yoenis Cespedes opened the score with a one-out home run in the fourth inning. It was his 21st long ball of the season.

Miami took the lead in the seventh inning. CF Marcell Ozuna hit a leadoff single and Giancarlo Stanton homered him in to put the Marlins up 2-0.

One inning later, Miami extended their lead to four runs. With two outs, LF Christian Yelich was hit by a pitch and Marcell Ozuna singled. Giancarlo Stanton followed and hit his second home run of the game to drive in three more runs for the Marlins.

The Mets cut the deficit to three when PH Alejandro De Aza homered with one out in the bottom of the eighth. It was his second home run of the season.

CL A.J. Ramos pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 25th save of the year. He posts a 2.38 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP.

Miami’s Wei-Yin Chen (5-3) pitched 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 walk and 1 earned run while striking out 5. His ERA and WHIP improved to 4.83 and 1.27, respectively.

New York’s Steven Matz (7-4) worked 7 innings, giving up 6 hits, 1 walk and 2 earned runs while fanning 6. He now has a 3.34 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP on the season.

Giancarlo Stanton went 3-for-4 with 2 runs, 2 HR and 5 RBI. He is batting .226 this year and has 37 runs, 17 HR and 45 RBI.
