Mets come from behind to beat Cubs

The New York Mets (41-37) come from behind as they beat the Chicago Cubs (51-27) 4-3 in the opener of their four-game series.

Chicago took an early lead in the first inning. RF Ben Zobrist hit a leadoff single and 3B Kris Bryant homered him in to put the Cubs up 2-0.

In the top of the sixth inning, 2B Javier Baez gave the Cubs a 3-0 lead with a leadoff home run. It was his eighth long ball of the season.

The Mets responded with a one-out home run by CF Yoenis Cespedes in the bottom of the frame. The ball was hit so hard, it landed in the third deck in left field.

New York took the lead in the seventh inning. C Travis d’Arnaud hit a one-out single and PH Alejandro De Aza walked next. RF Brandon Nimmo followed with a single and drove in Travis d’Arnaud for a run. Alejandro De Aza moved to 3B and Brandon Nimmo advanced to 2B on the throw.

Next up was 2B Neil Walker, who reached on a throwing error by Javier Baez to third base. Alejandro De Aza and Brandon Nimmo crossed home plate on the play to push the Mets 4-3 ahead.

CL Jeurys Familia loaded the bases in the ninth but managed to pitch a scoreless inning to earn his 27th save of the year. He posts a 2.82 ERA with a 1.23 WHIP.

Chicago’s SP John Lackey pitched 6.1 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 walks and 2 earned runs while striking out 5. He now has a 3.27 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP on the season.

New York’s Steven Matz worked 5.1 innings, giving up 7 hits, 3 walks and 3 earned runs while fanning 6. His ERA and WHIP increased to 3.40 and 1.23, respectively.

Yoenis Cespedes went 1-for-4 with 1 run, 1 HR and 1 RBI. He is now batting .288 with 41 runs, 19 HR and 46 RBI.
