SP Tyler Anderson was off to a fantastic start to his MLB career as the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 in the rubber match of their three-game series.
The Rockies activated Tyler Anderson from the 15-day DL yesterday to include him in their rearranged rotation. The 26-year old leftie has recovered from an oblique injury, which sidelined him for two months.
Tyler Anderson played like a veteran and was very much in command in his first appearance in the big leagues. In 6.1 innings of work he allowed 5 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 6. He did not issue a walk and ended up with a 1.42 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP.
Colorado were the first team to score when LF Ryan Raburn drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning to drive CF Charlie Blackmon home.
The Padres tied the game in the top of the seventh. SS Alexei Ramirez hit a ground rule double to open the inning and CF Jon Jay drove him in with a two-out single.
The Rockies responded with a leadoff homer by 1B Mark Reynolds in the bottom of the frame, which proved to be the game-winning run.
RP Jason Motte, who shares closer duties with RP Carlos Estevez while CL Jake McGee is out with a knee inflammation, attempted a save in the ninth inning. He retired the first two batters he faced and walked PH Christian Bethancourt.
Manager Walt Weiss decided to replace right-hander Jason Motte with a southpaw to create a favorable matchup and Boone Logan recorded the third out to earn the save.
San Diego’s SP Christian Friedrich pitched 6 innings, allowing 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 9. His ERA and WHIP improved to 2.12 and 1.44, respectively.
The San Diego Padres (26-38) return home to play a three-game series against the Miami Marlins (32-31) from Monday to Wednesday.
The Colorado Rockies (30-33) enjoy a day off before hosting two games against the New York Yankees (31-32) on Tuesday and Wednesday.
