Edwin Encarnacion gives Blue Jays late Push to beat Orioles

DH Edwin Encarnacion hit two home runs to give the Toronto Blue Jays (34-30) a late push as they beat the Baltimore Orioles (36-25) 11-6 in game three of their four-game series.

The 33-year old belted a pair of long balls to break the game wide open. He hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to give the Blue Jays an 8-4 lead and added another solo home run in the eighth to make it 10-6.

Edwin Encarnacion finished the game going 3-for-3 with 2 runs, 2 HR and 5 RBI. He is batting .243 on the year and has 29 runs, 15 HR and 53 RBI.

Jose Bautista sat today’s game out with a quad injury but will likely return to the lineup tomorrow. Toronto’s offense proved to be potent nonetheless.

The Blue Jays took an early 3-0 lead after three innings. SS Ryan Goins hit a triple in the second frame to drive in 1B Justin Smoak for the first score. One inning later, Edwin Encarnacion doubled to drive RF Ezequiel Carrera home and LF Michael Saunders followed with a sacrifice flyball to bring 3B Josh Donaldson home.

Baltimore tied the game in the fourth inning. RF Joey Rickard led off with his fifth home run of the season. SS Manny Machado followed with a double and 1B Chris Davis drove him in with a two-run homer. It was Davis’ 15th long ball of the season.

Manny Machado opened the sixth inning with his 16th home run of the year to give the Orioles a 4-3 lead.

Toronto responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame. Sacrifice flyballs from PH Devon Travis and Josh Donaldson drove in one run each and Edwin Encarnacion’s homer added another three runs to the scoreboard.

Toronto’s fourth sacrifice flyball of the game by PH Russel Martin drove CF Kevin Pillar home to make it 9-4 after seven innings.

The Orioles were hoping for a comeback as they loaded the bases in the eighth inning. Joey Rickard and Manny Machado hit a back-to-back singles and Chris Davis walked. DH Mark Trumbo followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to four.

RP Gavin Floyd took over for RP Joe Biagini. He allowed one run on a sacrifice flyball by 2B Jonathan Schoop but managed to record the necessary outs to end the inning.

Toronto restored their five-run lead in the bottom of the frame with back-to-back homers from Edwin Encarnacion and Michael Saunders.

Baltimore’s SP Mike Wright pitched 5 innings, allowing 6 hits, 5 walks and 4 earned runs while striking out 3. He has a 5.31 ERA with a 1.48 WHIP on the season.

Toronto’s SP J.A. Happ (7-3) worked 7 innings, giving up 8 hits and 4 earned runs while fanning 5. He posts a 3.70 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP this year.
