Marlins squander Lead, win in Extra Innings

The Miami Marlins blow a three-run lead and need extra innings to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3.

In the top of the second inning, the Pirates loaded the bases with two outs. SP Juan Nicasio hit a line drive to center field but CF Ichiro Suzuki charged and made a spectacular catch to prevent multiple runs from scoring.

Miami scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the frame. SS Adeiny Hechavarria hit a one-out triple and 2B Miguel Rojas brought him home with a sacrifice bunt.

The Marlins scored another two runs in the next inning. Ichiro hit a leadoff single and LF Christian Yelich had a base hit with one out. RF Giancarlo Stanton followed with a double and drove in Ichiro for the 2-0 lead.

The Pirates decided to intentionally walk 1B Justin Bour and loaded the bases. C J.T. Realmuto flied out to center field but Christian Yelich came home for Miami’s third run of the game.

Pittsburgh made it a one-run game in the seventh inning. 3B Jung-ho Kang broke up SP Wei-Yin Chen’s no-hitter with a leadoff double. Chen was replaced with RP Dustin McGowan after issuing a walk to C Chris Stewart.

Dustin McGowan retired the first two batters he faced but gave up a two-run double to RF Matt Joyce.

In the ninth inning Miami decided to give RP Kyle Barraclough an opportunity to earn the first save of his career. With one out SS Jordy Mercer was hit by a pitch and advanced to second base on a wild pitch one out later.

With a runner in scoring position 1B John Jaso hit a single to center field and drove in Jordy Mercer for the tying run.

After two scoreless innings Miami scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 12th. With one out 3B Martin Prado reached first base on a fielder’s choice. Christian Yelich stepped to the plate and hit a clutch double, driving Martin Prado home for the 4-3 win.

Pittsburgh’s Juan Nicasio pitched 6 innings, allowing 6 hits, 3 walks and 3 earned runs while striking out 4. He now has a 4.75 ERA with a 1.40 WHIP on the season.

Wei-Yin Chen worked 6 innings, giving up 1 hit, 3 walks and 2 earned runs while fanning 5. His ERA and WHIP improved to 4.25 and 1.22, respectively.

C Francisco Cervelli was hit in the foot by a pitch and left the game in the third inning. He is considered day-to-day.

CF Andrew McCutchen left the game in the sixth inning with a thumb injury. He, too is considered day-to-day.

The Pittsburgh Pirates (29-24) return home to host a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (24-29) from Friday to Sunday.

The Miami Marlins (29-25) continue their homestand with a three-game series against the New York Mets (29-23) from Friday through Sunday.
