The San Francisco Giants need 10 innings as they beat the San Diego Padres 4-3 to sweep their series.

The Giants scored the first run of the game in the second inning. SS Brandon Crawford hit a one-out single and advanced to third base on a groundout by RF Jarrett Parker. The Padres could have had an easy double play to end the inning if they hadn’t lined up in the shift on this play and left third base unattended.

LF Kelby Tomlinson followed with a single and drove in Brandon Crawford for an early score.

San Francisco doubled the lead in the sixth inning. CF Gregor Blanco hit a leadoff triple and came home after a one-out single by 3B Matt Duffy.

The Padres cut the deficit to one in the top of the seventh inning. 1B Brett Wallace doubled with one out and crossed home plate on a two-out single from SS Alexei Ramirez.

The Giants restored their two-run lead in the bottom of the frame. C Trevor Brown hit a one-out single and CF Denard Span, who replaced Jarrett Parker in outfield, drove him home with a double to deep center field.

San Diego tied the game in the eighth inning. Christian Bethancourt came into the game as pinch hitter and drew a leadoff walk. With one out, 3B Yangervis Solarte hammered the ball 409 ft. just over the wall to tie the game at three runs apiece.

Matt Duffy singled in the tenth inning with one out. He went on to move to second base on a wild pitch from RP Brad Hand with two outs. Brandon Crawford followed with a single to deep center field and batted in Matt Duffy for the game-winning run.

San Diego’s SP James Shields pitched 6 innings, allowing 5 hits, 1 walk and 2 earned runs while striking out 6. He now has a 3.06 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP on the season.

San Francisco’s SP Jake Peavy worked 6.2 innings, giving up 6 hits, 1 walk and 1 earned run while fanning 4. His ERA and WHIP improved to 7.26 and 1.78, respectively.

The San Diego Padres (19-29) continue their road trip with a three-game series at the Arizona Diamondbacks (21-26) from Friday to Sunday.

The San Francisco Giants (30-19) will travel to the Colorado Rockies (21-23) to play a three-game series from Friday through Sunday.
