Astros beat Orioles in Extra Innings

The Houston Astros (18-28) need 13 innings as they beat the Baltimore Orioles (26-17) 3-2 in the opener of their three-game series.

Baltimore opened the scoring in the fifth inning. DH Pedro Alvarez hit a leadoff home run to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead. It was his third long ball of the season.

The Astros responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame. DH Evan Gattis was the runner at third when 1B Luis Valbuena launched a two-run homer to right field with two outs.

SS Manny Machado tied the game for the Orioles in the sixth inning. He blasted the ball 410 ft. to left field for his 13th home run of the season.

Houston’s CF Colby Rasmus was ejected in the seventh inning for arguing a called strike.

Effective bullpens on both sides sent the game deep into extra innings. It took until the 13th inning for the Astros to break the tie.

RP Dylan Bundy came into the game to pitch for the Orioles. He allowed a leadoff triple to LF Tony Kemp and issued back-to-back intentional walks to RF George Springer and 2B Jose Altuve to load the bases.

SS Carlos Correa made the most of the opportunity and singled to center field, enabling Tony Kemp to come home for the game-winning run.

Baltimore’s SP Chris Tillman pitched 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, 3 walks and 2 earned runs while striking out 5. He now has a 2.61 ERA on the season with a 1.13 WHIP.

Houston’s SP Doug Fister worked 5.2 innings, giving up 3 hits, 3 walks and 2 earned runs while fanning 3. He posts a 4.12 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP this year.
