Philadelphia’s pitchers strike out 17 batters as the Phillies (23-17) beat the Miami Marlins (21-18) 3-1 in game two of their three-game series.

1B Tommy Joseph, who was called up from Triple-A Leigh Valley on Friday, hit the first home run of his young MLB career. He led the second inning off and blasted the ball 349 ft. into the netting of the foul pole in left field.

The Phillies scored again in the fifth inning. SS Freddy Galvis hit a leadoff double and reached third base while PH Emmanuel Burriss struck out. RF Peter Bourjos followed with a two-out single and Freddy Galvis came home to give Philadelphia a 2-0 lead.

2B Cesar Hernandez opened the bottom of the sixth inning with a single. With one out, Tommy Joseph hit a single but CF Marcell Ozuna misjudged the ball and his fielding error enabled Joseph to advance to third base and Cesar Hernandez to cross home plate for Philadelphia’s third run.

CL Jeanmar Gomez gave up one run to SS Adeiny Hechavarria on a sacrifice flyball by 2B Derek Dietrich but earned his league-leading 15th save of the season.

Miami’s SP Wei-Yin Chen (3-2) pitched 6 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 6. He has a 4.22 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP this year.

SP Vince Velasquez (5-1) struggled with his pitch count and had to be relieved after 5 innings. He gave up 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 10. His ERA and WHIP improved to 2.42 and 0.99, respectively.

Tommy Joseph went 3-for-4 with 1 run, 1 HR and 1 RBI. After three games he is batting .400 and has 2 runs, 1 HR and 1 RBI.
