The Colorado Rockies (18-18) score five runs in the third inning en route to a 7-4 win over the New York Mets (21-15).

The Rockies had a one-run lead before pulling away in the third. SS Trevor Story hit a one-out double in the first inning and advanced to third base on a throwing error by SP Logan Verrett. 3B Nolan Arenado followed with a groundout and Trevor Story came home for Colorado’s first run.

The Mets tied the game in the top of the second inning. 1B Lucas Duda led off with a double. A single from 2B Neil Walker moved Lucas Duda to third base. C Kevin Plawecki hit a one-out single and drove in Lucas Duda.

Colorado responded in the bottom of the inning. 1B Mark Reynolds hit a leadoff double and 2B DJ LeMahieu batted him home with an RBI-single.

Things got heated in the third inning. The Rockies loaded the bases with back-to-back singles by Nolan Arenado and LF Gerardo Parra and a one-out walk from Mark Reynolds. DJ LeMahieu drew another walk for a 3-1 lead.

Up next was C Tony Wolters. With the count two-and-two, Wolters swung at a ball that bounced in front of him. The Mets believed it was a strikeout but HP Carlos Torres decided there was a foul tip.

Mets manager Terry Collins protested and was ejected. Tony Wolters on the other hand made the most of the lifeline he just received. He doubled and drove in Gerardo Parra and Mark Reynolds for two runs.

After another out, CF Charlie Blackmon drove in DJ LeMahieu and Tony Wolters with a single to give the Rockies a 7-1 lead.

Logan Verrett (3-1) was relieved after allowing another single to Trevor Story, which advanced Charlie Blackmon to third base. He pitched 2.2 innings, surrendering 10 hits, 3 walks and 7 earned runs. His ERA and WHIP increased to 3.75 and 1.54, respectively.

Neil Walker hit a leadoff home run in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to five runs. It was his 10th homer of the season.

The Mets scored another two runs in the sixth inning but it wasn’t enough for a successful comeback. Lucas Duda hit an RBI-double to drive in CF Yoenis Cespedes and crossed home plate when SS Asdrubal Cabrera grounded into double play.

Colorado’s SP Eddie Butler (2-1) pitched into the sixth inning but was replaced after New York’s third run. He allowed 9 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 3. He has a 4.74 ERA with a 1.16 WHIP on the season.

Tony Wolters went 2-for-4 with 1 run and 2 RBI. He is batting .194 this season and has 10 runs and 8 RBI.

DJ LeMahieu had 2 hits in 3 at-bats, drove in two runs and scored once. He has a batting average of .304 this season with 21 runs, 2 HR and 12 RBI.
