There could not have been a more dramatic ninth inning in the Bronx, as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2.

Boston had one out and the bases loaded when DH David Ortiz stepped to the plate. With the count 3-1, Ortiz believed CL Andrew Miller threw ball four but the HP-umpire Ron Kulpa called it a strike. The slugger was enraged and started shouting at the umpire. Manager John Farrell stormed out of the dugout to step between them and was ejected after arguing vehemently.

David Ortiz continued with his at-bat and struck out looking. He went to the dugout and slammed down his equipment. When Kulpa ejected him as well Ortiz had to be restrained by several teammates as he attempted to confront the umpire again.

Andrew Miller went on to strike out 1B Hanley Ramirez for his 6th save of the season.

The Red Sox and David Ortiz got off to a good start. SS Xander Bogaerts hit a two-out double with David Ortiz up next in the first inning. The Yankees decided to play the shift and neglected to cover third base, however, it took Bogaerts three pitches to realize that he can steal the base uncontested.

David Ortiz then hit a two-run homer to give Boston an early 2-0 lead. It was Ortiz’ 50th home run against the Yankees. He is now tied with Carl Yastrzemski for second-most home runs in a Red Sox uniform (452). He also passed Gary Sheffield on the all-time list with 510 career home runs, ranking him 25th.

CF Jacoby Ellsbury scored New York’s first run in the bottom of the inning but injured his hip while stealing third base. He managed to come home on an RBI-double by C Brian McCann but went straight to the clubhouse and did not return to the game.

RF Dustin Ackley, who replaced Jacoby Ellsbury, hit an RBI-single in his first at-bat and drove in 2B Starlin Castro for the tying run in the second inning.

CF Aaron Hicks scored the game-winning run with a leadoff homer in the seventh inning. It was Hicks’ first long ball of the season.

Boston’s SP Rick Porcello pitched 7 innings, giving up 6 hits, 2 walks and 3 earned runs, while striking out 5. He has a 2.95 ERA and 0.96 WHIP this season.

SP Michael Pineda worked 6 innings, allowing 8 hits, 1 walk and 2 earned runs, while striking out 4. His ERA and WHIP improved to 5.73 and 1.58, respectively.
