The San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres combine for 22 runs and 25 hits as the Giants win 13-9 to sweep the three-game series.

The Giants have now won five of their last six games and post a 12-11 record in the NL West, one game behind division leader Los Angeles.

The San Diego Padres have lost five games in a row and are rock bottom in the NL West with a 7-15 record.

San Francisco started the game with an early 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Padres scored four runs in the top of the third inning but their lead didn’t last long.

Within three innings San Francisco poured run after run on the Padres and took a commanding 12-4 lead after five innings.

San Diego’s 1B Wil Myers blasted a three-run homer in the seventh inning but any comeback attempts were in vain.

Padres SP Andrew Cashner struggled mightily. He threw 34 pitches in the first inning and another 24 in the second. He was relieved after two outs and another 31 pitches in the third inning. Cashner allowed 4 hits, 4 walks and 3 earned runs while striking out 2. His ERA on the season rose from 4.29 to 4.94 and his WHIP from 1.24 to 1.44.

San Francisco’s SP Jeff Samardzija did not fare much better. He gave up 5 hits, 2 walks and 5 earned runs in 5.2 innings of work and struck out 7 batters. After five starts he is 3-1 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.

1B Brandon Belt was a home run shy of the cycle. He had 3 hits in 4 at-bats and drove in 5 runs, while scoring twice himself. He is now batting .303 on the season with 13 runs, 3 HR and 16 RBI.

After a rest day tomorrow the Giants will play a three-game series at the New York Mets (12-7). The Padres travel to the division leader to play a three-game series at the Los Angeles Dodgers (12-9) from Friday through Sunday.
