The Colorado Rockies score four runs in the top of the eighth inning to win 5-1 at the Cincinnati Reds.

Both starting pitchers were pretty impressive and kept the opposing batters mostly in check.

The Rockies were the first team to score in the second inning. 3B Nolan Arenado led the inning off with a single and 1B Ben Paulsen walked next. CF Brandon Barnes’ sacrifice bunt advanced both runners and 2B Cristhian Adames’ groundout drove in Arenado for an early 1-0 lead.

Cincinnati’s SP Dan Straily was relieved after the fifth inning. He threw 76 pitches and allowed 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4. He now has an ERA of 2.70 on the season and an impressive 0.83 WHIP.

RF Jay Bruce tried to inspire Cincinnati’s offense in the fifth inning. He hit a ball deep to center field and tried to go for a triple but a spectacular throw from LF Gerardo Parra to Nolan Arenado caught him inches before he could touch the base.

The Reds managed to tie the game one inning later. SS Zack Cozart reached first base on a two-out single. Next up was 3B Jordan Pacheco who hit a double. Cozart stopped at third base but a throwing error by Gerardo Parra enabled him to cross home plate for the tying run.

Colorado’s SP Jordan Lyles pitched through the seventh inning and left the game with a pitch count of 76. He gave up 4 hits and 1 walk and struck out 4 hitters. His ERA is down to 6.00 after three starts and his WHIP is 1.53 now.

Cincinnati’s RP Ross Ohlendorf threw some erratic pitches but he retired the first five batters he faced, striking out four of them. With two outs in the eighth inning SS Trevor Story came to the plate and homered deep into the stands for the go-ahead run. RF Carlos Gonzalez and Nolan Arenado were next to reach first base on a single and a walk, respectively. Ben Paulsen’s subsequent three-run homer gave the Rockies a 5-1 lead with one inning to spare.

Trevor Story’s home run in the eighth inning was his eighth long ball this season. He is batting .309 with 14 RBI and scored 12 runs.
